Ian Ruppenthal is a printmaker and artist based in Chicago, IL. In May 2020 Ian graduated from Oberlin College with a degree in Studio Art and Environmental Studies.
My work examines human's vitiated relationship with nature. Dissecting the relationship(s) with the non-human animal, and natural world; specifically in regards to historical notions of ‘nature’, and contemporary conversations around the state of our changing environment are central to my work.
Prints and drawings are often influenced by historic work in scientific illustration, and modern field guides; as well as my lifelong love for birds and the natural world.
Originally a North Carolina native, recurring are landscapes in which I hold great affinity - the southeastern coastal plain, the Southern Appalachians, and the boreal forests of North America.
